With only six races left, the 37.5-point gap which sits between the two top drivers in the Formula 4 United States Championship grows increasingly anxious.
Quebecois native Patrick Woods-Toth finished in the top five in each of the three races of the championship’s previous round at New Jersey Motorsports Park, setting himself at 178.5 points heading into the weekend While Woods-Toth showed speed, both drivers sitting right behind him in the championship standings made inroads.
Those two, Michael Costello and Titus Sherlock, both won races at NJMP.
Costello just missed out on the podium in both the first and final races but won race 2. He also showed his signature single-lap pace, setting race 1’s fastest lap. Costello sits with 142 points on the season.
If NJMP was a breakout weekend for any driver, that would be Sherlock. The 18-year old who hails from Prosper, Texas confidently drove to victory in race 1. Sherlock sits 30 points behind Costello, with 112 points in 2023.
More drivers who had strong weekends:
- Alex Berg won the third race of the weekend, marking the first win for the Doran-Kroll Competition driver of the season.
- Two drivers who drive for family-owned teams, Daniel Cara and Bacon Zelenka, both recorded season-best finishes at NJMP. Both drivers got their first podium of the season. Cara became the fourth Brazilian ever to be on the F4 US podium.
- Argentine Luciano Martinez had his season-best finish of sixth. Martinez is in his first season of racing in the US, having previously raced in F4 Argentina
Virginia International Raceway will prevent many challenges for drivers, but ones that they have pointed out to us that are the most pressing are the course’s narrow sections and fast sweeping corners.
