In the first year of their presence in the Formula 4 United States Championship, International Motorsport has continued to make noise.
This morning, 23-year old Florida-native Augusto Soto-Schirripa drove the team’s red and white car to the top step of the podium at Virginia International Raceway.
Soto-Schirripa on the last round of the series at New Jersey Motorsports Park. In the last two races he drove in the series at Mid-Ohio, he had finished first and second.
A half hour before the race was set to start, an announcement was made by race control to move the drivers to wet tires to accommodate a drying track.
The race started four minutes into its 30-minute window with the front row being comprised of championship frontrunners: Canadian Patrick Woods-Toth and 16-year old Floridian Michael Costello.
On the first lap, an incident involving Carl Bennett proceeded to bring out the safety car. Soto-Schirripa had leaped over Woods-Toth from the second row into second place as he trailed Costello.
The restart saw Costello run off the track into an unforgiving grass field in Turn 1, putting him out of contention. Woods-Toth himself fell back to sixth place as he moved off track to avoid a spinning Bacon Zelenka, who was running fourth.
After the chaos, Woods-Toth made a move up the inside of Turn 3 on the next lap for fifth. As his teammate Titus Sherlock spun through the esses, Woods-Toth would work his way back into fourth.
Entering the race, Woods-Toth had a 36.5 point lead over Costello in the championship. With Costello out of the points, Woods-Toth began inching toward a podium spot.
Battling for second, Luciano Martinez and Alex Berg would collide in the closing laps which sent Martinez off course and Woods-Toth onto the podium. After the race’s second safety car was brought out, the race ended with Soto-Schirripa as winner.
Woods-Toth extended his lead to 48.5 points over Costello with the race win. Alex Berg’s second place allowed for him to climb above Sherlock to take third in the championship.
