It’s not quite the Super Bowl, but for Jack Jeffers and Sebastian Wheldon, this upcoming Sunday will be championship deciding.
The two drivers are separated by one point heading into the Yacademy Winter Series’ last race at Sebring International Raceway.
Jeffers, driving for Exclusive Autosport, pulled off the clean sweep of qualifying on pole and won both races today. The second win was especially impressive given that Jeffers started 8th due to a partial reverse grid.
Jeffers entered the day six points behind Wheldon. When he won pole position, the gap closed to five.
Behind Jeffers in race 1 were two VRD Racing drivers, Wheldon and Max Taylor. Wheldon secured his fourth consecutive podium finish in Yacademy with a second-place effort. Taylor, who is driving in USF2000 next season, won a USF Juniors race last year at Road America. By winning, Jeffers closed the points gap to three.
In race 2, Wheldon lost the championship lead with a fourth-place finish from seventh on the grid while Jeffers stormed to the front to win. The win was hard fought as he traded places in the closing laps with G3 Argyros, who secured Jay Howard Driver Development’s first podium in Yacademy.
While Exclusive Autosport’s Evan Cooley, who had finished on the podium in all three races in Sebring, was in championship contention heading into the final race of the day, a fifth and twelfth-place finish forced him out of contention.
Wheldon is one point behind Jeffers. The point structure for the final race is 10 points for the winner, eight for second, seven for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth.
The two championship contenders will start on the front row for tomorrow’s race at 11:20 a.m..
