RELATED: Hear Dennis Hauger’s thoughts after his first Indy NXT test at Indianapolis and learn how the Norwegian ranks among the best-performing newcomers in series history here.
Caio Collet led the way for HMD Motorsports in today’s Indy NXT test at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama.
Collet’s time of 1:10.638 was not only the quickest, but paced the field by nearly half a second over Andretti’s James Roe Jr. HMD’s Josh Pierson impressed during the test as well, finishing in third place. Lochie Hughes also got his second consecutive top-5 in an already impressive testing campaign with Andretti Global where his 1:11.200 put him in fifth place.
Two newcomers took place in the test who did not take part in the test last weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Max Taylor, the reigning USF Juniors champion with Velocity Racing Development, went 11th fastest as the youngest driver in the field with a 1.11:774. Taylor just turned 17 and is coming off of a season where he nearly won two junior series titles in the same year.
Taylor’s P11 is one of the best results in testing so far for Juncos Hollinger Racing in 2024.
The other newcomer to testing in Indy NXT is Sophia Flörsch, who heads to test for HMD after previously competing in FIA Formula 3. Flörsch finished P19 but outpaced HMD teammate Hailie Deegan, who is adjusting to competing in open-wheel racing after previously driving in NASCAR.
One important note when analyzing these results is to keep an eye on the disparities in the number of laps each driver ran. While some utilized today to get over 100 laps in, some drivers limited their testing to short runs. ABEL’s Myles Rowe, who led the Chris Griffis Memorial Test at Indianapolis, only showed up as having ran seven laps today due to transponder issues.
Additionally, Dennis Hauger only ran just under 40 laps putting himself 19th in laps ran but the Andretti driver still managed to place himself in the top 10 by the end of the day with a 1:11.650.
