A mid-race pass on a well-timed restart was all Pabst Racing’s Max Garcia needed to pick up his first his first win in USF Pro 2000 to finish off the race weekend on the Streets of St. Petersburg on Sunday morning.
After winning the first race of the weekend yesterday, Turn 3 Motorsport’s Alessandro de Tullio started the race on pole with Garcia, the 2024 USF2000 champion, alongside him on the front row.
The first caution came out on lap three when Pabst’s Michael Costello and Turn 3’s Elliot Cox collided with each other battling for the final podium spot heading through turn 2. After fighting side-by-side, Cox ended up in the wall, leading to both his races this weekend finishing with DNFs. Costello also did not continue following the incident.
A second full-course caution, the fifth of the weekend for USF Pro 2000, occurred when Turn 3’s Tyke Durst retired from the race following a crash in turn 1 which dislodged his car’s rear wing.
On the ensuing restart, Garcia got a great run and dove to the inside of de Tullio to take the lead on lap 11. Exclusive Autosport’s Mac Clark followed the Pabst driver through to take second place. de Tullio fell another place as VRD Racing’s Max Taylor made a move past him into a podium spot on lap 14. de Tullio’s day got even worse on lap 18, when he found himself in the turn 4 wall.
On the next restart, Turn 3 Motorsport had their fourth car involved in a full-course caution as Cooper Becklin found himself in the turn 4 wall. Comet Racing’s Logan Adams also had his race ended in an unrelated incident in turn 2. Pabst’s Jacob Douglas was given the third-place position ahead of Taylor after Taylor was issued a blocking penalty on the restart.
Garcia, Clark and Douglas finished the race on the podium with Taylor and VRD’s Owen Tangavelou rounding out the top five.
